1,000 New Jobs Coming to Berbice: President Ali Unveils Massive Port and Infrastructure Projects

President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has announced significant developments in East Berbice-Corentyne, projecting the creation of an additional one thousand jobs as the government prepares to break ground on the US$285 million Berbice Port project.

This information was shared during a community meeting at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) in New Amsterdam, where local residents, undeterred by persistent rain, gathered to hear the news.

The Berbice Port project represents a substantial investment with local shipping companies Muneshwers Limited and John Fernandes Limited actively involved in its development.

President Ali emphasized that the Berbice Port will complement the planned development of a deep water port in the region. The government is collaborating with the international engineering firm Bechtel, known for its expertise in the construction and management of deep-water ports worldwide, to finalise these plans.

The deep water port will facilitate the establishment of Guyana’s second gas project, unlocking substantial opportunities in various sectors. These infrastructural enhancements include:

1. High Span Bridge: A modern four-lane bridge across the Berbice River will be constructed, eliminating toll fees for commuters.

2. AI Data Center: In alignment with the global shift towards a digital economy, the government plans to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) data center in Berbice.

3.Road Expansion: A US$604 million project to expand the road from Palmyra to Moleson Creek will further enhance connectivity in the region.

4. New Stadium and Facilities: Plans include the development of a new stadium alongside hotels, entertainment complexes, a national cultural market, and private hospitals, fostering a vibrant community atmosphere.

5. Airport Transformation: The Rose Hall aerodrome is set to be upgraded into a municipal airport, similar to Ogle International Airport in Georgetown.

Additionally, President Ali reiterated that these projects align with a comprehensive development agenda aimed at transforming the region.

These announcements mark a pivotal moment for East Berbice-Corentyne, reflecting the government’s commitment to economic growth and community development.

The investments in infrastructure, healthcare, education, and technology indicate a strategic effort to build a sustainable, diversified economy that will benefit residents for years to come.

The focus on the port and related projects not only highlights the importance of connectivity and logistics but also sets the stage for Guyana's integration into the global economy.
